Visual Inertial odometry tracking
The SLAM challenge
Delivery robots, security robots or cleaning robots need to be able to constantly understand how they move and where they are currently located to be able to do tasks effectively. If the operational design domain (ODD) includes outdoors or mixed indoor/outdoor environments, they also need to cope with changing light and weather conditions. GNSS is often not available or unreliable.
Today's robots typically rely heavily on LiDAR and/or INS systems if they operate outdoors. However, 3D LiDARs are prohibitively expensive for many applications, while 2D LiDARs are not sufficient outdoors and they all struggle with one or the other "edge case".
How ArtiSLAM can be applied
Visual Inertial Odometry (VIO) can be added as a standalone addition to a client's current positioning stack providing high frequency and smooth motion output for planning and control.
In inaccessible areas for existing positioning systems, the VIO kicks in to provide continuous tracking of motion and position. This allows the robot to keep moving confidently towards its destination until the other systems recover and can be used again together with vision.
How Clients Benefit
- Greater coverage: Robots can move in otherwise inoperable areas through this powerful dead-reckoning system.
- Additional redundancies: In instances where the main system fails to position itself, the VIO module is always there as a reliable safety net.
- Better control & management: ArtiSLAM outputs a high frequency, zero latency, smooth trajectory output for the robots' control and navigation modules.
